Background

My name is Allen Lujan. For the past 19 years I have been a Special Education teacher for medically fragile students. Many of the skills (and knowledge) that I use in my classroom on a daily basis, I first learned or gained when I went through Hospital Corpsman school while in the Navy (1979--1983).

Licensed Vocational Nurse
After leaving the Navy as a Corpsman, I later became a nurse (LVN) and took a homecare assignment for a young boy named Kevin Morgan; Kevin was on a ventilator and required G-tube feedings while going to school. I stayed with Kevin for 15 years prior to becoming a Special Education teacher in 2002. Kevin would pass away in 2004; I share many of my experiences with Kevin in this blog. However, I also share many of my classroom friendships that I have had the honor of experiencing over the last 19 years as a Special Educator.

Influence
I must honestly say that my mother had a great impact upon my vocational choice in life--a special education teacher for students with medical needs. For many years my mother cared for the home-bound elderly: cooking, shopping, cleaning, and bathing. At the end of the day, she always came home and talked positively about helping to set someone’s life in order, assisting with basic needs; this brought my mother great reward and a feeling of joy and purpose. She consistently talked with passion of caring for those who could not always care for themselves. In this regard, my Mother had a great impact and influence upon my life choices and career.
