Legacy

How we educate and care for the severely and profoundly disabled will be our hallmark legacy; and for this reason, we (as a society) are being closely watched.
All the answers to our earthly existence are wrapped up in the care and well-being of the severely and profoundly disabled; the answers to all of life's hard questions are there.

Most of the time, however, we look elsewhere--microscopically inward and telescopically outward to distant worlds and galaxies--for answers to the meaning and reason for our very existence. While all along, everything we need to know to live with purpose, direction, and dignity, is right before us.

Endurance is ...

Endurance is not just the ability to bear a hard thing, but to turn it into glory. -William Barclay

Little Eyes are (always) Watching

Parents and teachers no doubt realize the truth to this simple bottle cap statement. However, parents and teachers also know that there is rarely a time (or moment) when no one is watching. Children, being sponges to the world around them, are always watching. So, I suppose the real message is this: If you want to be known for your integrity (and you work closely with children), always do the right thing; children (being children) are definitely watching.

A Different Approach to Education

"Finland, one of the leading educational hot-spots in the world, is embarking on one of the most radical overhauls in modern education. By 2020, the country plans to phase out teaching individual subjects such as maths, chemistry and physics, and instead teach students by 'topics' or broad phenomena." --Fiona MacDonald

Education Will Get You There

Proper Nutrition and the Ability to Learn

"The Children's Defense Fund found that lack of proper nutrition is related to many health issues including, but not limited to, disorders related to their mental well-being, such as anxiety, hyperactivity, and learning disabilities. Malnourished children are also more likely to suffer from obesity, which can trigger a number of other health issues, including high blood pressure, low self-esteem, and eating disorders. These disorders significantly impact children's physical and psychological developmental and negatively impact their ability to learn."

Millions of American Kids Are Missing Out on this Developmental Necessity

Can We Fight Obesity by Taxing Soda?

"The tax successfully reduced people's soda purchases, according to an observational study published Wednesday in the BMJ. Within a year, people in Mexico were buying 12% fewer sugar-sweetened beverages. That's not all — within the same period of time, sales of bottled water rose 4%."

Food Insecurity?

"Nearly 15 percent of the American population suffers from food insecurity, defined as when people eat less, go hungry or eat less nutritious meals than they should due to money. Almost one-third of those considered food insecure are children."

America's School Food

"Given these considerable challenges, it isn’t surprising that cooking from scratch is the exception in our country’s schools. There are districts serving exemplary meals. But some are often either running a deficit or reliant on private philanthropy, which is hardly a model on which we can rely nationwide."

School Adopts All-Vegan Lunch Menu

"No off-site food is allowed onto campus, everything served is plant-based, and the school believes this process educates kids on health and making better food choices."

When Good Men [and Women] Stand

"When good men [and women] stand, evil men are restrained. When good men sit idly by, evil men prevail. If we fail to stand against evil, we have no one to blame but ourselves when evil triumphs. In the words of Plato, The price of apathy is to be ruled by evil men."
