The Risks at Jenny Lind Elementary

As a parent, it is always advised and recommended to inquire about the "healthiness" of a school (or even a specific classroom) which your child may attend over the course of a school year; the inquiry is vital if your child has allergies, asthma, or any environmental sensitivities.

I recommend an inquiry only because the Jenny Lind Elementary School campus has a significant number of long standing health and safety issues. These issues are critical (or even severe) to those with sensitivities:

1. Aged Portable Classrooms: (25 plus years old--10 years beyond recommended "healthy" usage). Leads to poor indoor air quality, fatigue, and diminished learning.

2. Ongoing roof and ceiling leaks in a number of JLE classrooms: Leads to poor indoor air quality and a diminished, "unhealthy" learning environment.

3. Aged/inadequate HVAC systems--primarily in aged portables: Leads to poor indoor air quality and environmental sensitivities--allergies, asthma, fatigue, and diminished learning.

4. Aged Carpeting--original in most portables: 25 plus years: Promotes poor indoor air quality and environmental sensitivities--allergies, asthma, fatigue, and diminished learning.

5. Annual Cliff Swallow Nesting: The increased population and habitation of birds (Cliff Swallows) and their nesting excrement on campus, promotes poor indoor/outdoor air quality and environmental sensitivities such as allergies, asthma, fatigue, and diminished learning.

6. Outdated/Inadequate School District wastewater reservoir: chemically treated water used on campus: Promotes poor indoor/outdoor air quality and environmental sensitivities: allergies, asthma, fatigue, and diminished learning.

7. Inadequate (illegal) ingress and egress: "Safety Hazard" in an emergency; known and documented for many years.

As a parent (and teacher) myself, I ask that you take the time to check out these health and safety issues at JLE: I know (and believe) your child--a potential Jenny Lind Student--is worth the time and effort. You, as a parent, are ALWAYS your child's best advocate. --Allen Lujan
